You simply load it, secure the lid, and select Standard Time or Quick Time. Standard Time is six hours and Quick Time is four. Another thing that I really love about this is how quiet it is when it's running. You can barely hear it. I like to run it at the end of the day, and in the morning I have fresh compost for my garden. I also love that there is no odor with this. It comes with a charcoal filter and the charcoal to fill it, along with easy to read instructions on how to do it, and there was absolutely no odor while it's composting.
