Hi, I'm Katie with WTI. If you're looking for an adventure book that you can enjoy with your pre-teen, then I would check out My Side of the Mountain by Gene Craighead George. This book is about 13-year-old Sam who lives in New York City with his 11 family members in a tiny apartment. He decides that he's sick of it and he wants to run away and go and live in the mountains. He actually does this and he lives in the mountains for a year. That's what takes place in this book. My daughter and I liked it because it was simple to read and yet it kept us interested. We really liked to see how he befriended different animals and how he overcame different obstacles like dealing with the seasons in the mountains. Imagine winter in the Catskill Mountains. How did he deal with that? I also like to see how he overcame internal struggles because he was a 13-year-old boy alone for a year. How did that affect him? It led to a lot of great conversations with my daughter about the difference between being alone and loneliness. So if you're looking for an adventure novel to share with your child, then I would check out My Side of the Mountain. That's just my point of view.
