If you’re a fan of the classic 80s movie The Goonies, then you’re in for a treat! Join me as I revisit some of the iconic filming locations in Astoria and Cannon Beach, Oregon. The last two stops on my tour were absolute favorites, so make sure you stick around till the end to see where we went. Let’s dive into this nostalgic journey!
Starting Point: The Goonies House
I recommend kicking off your tour at The Goonies House. To get there, head west on Highway 30 and turn left at Gino’s Pizza. You’ll see The Goonies sign at the end of 37th Street. Park west of 37th and Duane, then walk up the gravel driveway. There’s another sign guiding you to walk single file up the drive—yes, it’s that iconic!
As you make your way up, you’ll catch a glimpse of Data’s house to the left of the Goonies house. The address is 368 38th Street, and while you can’t tour the house itself (it’s a private residence), it’s still a must-see for any fan. I didn’t do the Truffle Shuffle for you, but I did bust out a little cha-cha—you’re welcome!
Pro Tip: This is a residential area, so be respectful, keep your visit short, and avoid disturbing the neighbors.
Lunch Break: The Green Door Cafe
After soaking in the Goonies vibes, head to The Green Door Cafe for lunch. It’s less than two minutes from the next stop on your tour, and trust me, it’s worth it! This gem offers plenty of gluten-free and vegan options. I ordered the Frisee Salad with miso dressing—it was bursting with savory and umami flavors. My friend tried the breakfast sandwich, which was moist, flavorful, and downright delicious.
We even got to meet the owner, who has seriously perfected her recipes. From almond flour biscuits to chocolate chip cookies, everything was a delight. Just a heads-up: they’re closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so plan accordingly!
Next Stop: The Flavel House Museum
Next up is the Flavel House Museum on 8th Street. In the movie, Mikey’s father, Mr. Walsh, worked as a museum curator here. You’ll also recognize it as the spot where the Goonies cycled down the hill past the museum.
The grounds are stunning and offer a peaceful place to sit and take in the views of downtown Astoria. As a history buff, I couldn’t resist exploring this historic Victorian home. We did the self-guided tour, which took about an hour. Fun fact: as you exit the house, you’ll have a great vantage point of the Clatsop County Jail—our next stop!
Oregon Film Museum (Formerly the Clatsop County Jail)
The jail is where Jake Fratelli was held in the movie, and it’s now home to the Oregon Film Museum. The self-guided tour here is short (about 30 minutes), but it’s packed with fun movie memorabilia.
Outside the museum, you’ll find the 1984 Jeep Cherokee that the Fratellis drove to their hideout. It’s a perfect photo op for any Goonies fan!
Ecola State Park: Breathtaking Views and Movie Magic
Now, let’s head west on Highway 30 and south on Highway 101 to Ecola State Park. This was hands down my favorite part of the day. The views are absolutely breathtaking, and it’s easy to see why this location was chosen for the film.
A day pass costs $5 and can be purchased in the parking lot. The small structure to the right of my video stands where the Lighthouse Lounge was in the movie. This park is also where the Goonies stopped on their bikes while searching for the beginning of the treasure map.
Pro Tip: You may find it comfortable to wear jeans and boots if you plan to do a lot of walking and be sure to bring sunglasses too.
Final Stop: Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock
Last but not least, head south on Highway 101 to Cannon Beach. This is where the Fratelli car chase ended in the movie. Park at the Haystack Rock parking area (it’s free!) and enjoy beach access along Eola Court.
Haystack Rock is an iconic landmark, and walking along the beach feels like stepping right into the movie. It’s the perfect way to wrap up your Goonies tour.
