"An amazing stay at Iberostar Selection Esmeralda in Cayo Cruz, Cuba."
I just got back from an amazing stay at Iberostar Selection Esmeralda in Cayo Cruz, Cuba, and I want to share all the tips and tricks I learned to help you have the perfect vacation.
Arrival & First Impressions
The Airport & Transfer
- Cuban airports are slow and HOT—dress lightly and be patient.
- The bus ride is about an hour to the resort.
- Rooms aren't ready until ~4 PM, so pack a change of clothes in your carry-on to enjoy the beach while you wait.
- If arriving at night, take a photo of the resort map and ask staff to mark your building—it's easy to get lost in the dark!
The Room
We stayed in Building 4 with a gorgeous ocean view. The king-size bed was comfy, but note:
- The comforter is in the closet (you'll need it—the AC works well!).
- No facecloths—bring your own if you use them.
- Towels were refreshed most days, but not always.
- Toilet paper runs out around the resort—pack an extra roll for your beach bag!
The Beach & Pool
The Beach
- Softest sand ever! A short walk from most rooms.
- Ocean is perfect for swimming—clear and calm.
- Bring TONS of sunscreen (we each used a full tube in a week).
- Towel clips are a MUST—it's windy, and your towel will fly away!
The Pool
- Most lively spot—music, games, and a swim-up bar.
- Limited shade & seating—if you want a poolside bed, wake up by 5 AM to claim one!
- Lunch tip: Eat at the poolside grill—their chicken sandwiches are delicious.
Food & Drinks
The Buffet
- Omelets at breakfast are a must—so good!
- Butter runs out early, so get there if you want some.
- Fresh fruit, cheese, and deli meats always available.
- Surprise nights like seafood feasts (sushi, prawns!) with live music.
Drinks
- Cuba has shortages—some items (cola, mint, glassware) may not be available daily.
- Bring an insulated cup—bars sometimes run out of glasses.
- Must-try: Iced coffee with dark rum—perfect morning pick-me-up!
Tips & Warnings
-Tipping: Bring $1 USD bills—great for bartenders, housekeeping, and gardeners (who might hook you up with fresh fruit or coconuts!).
-Water safety: Do NOT drink tap water—avoid brushing teeth with it and be cautious with raw foods.
-Bring a travel pharmacy & probiotics—some stomach issues are common.
-Pack snacks & condiments (peanut butter, ketchup, etc.)—they're hard to find in Cuba.
Final Thoughts
This resort is stunning, with friendly staff, but expect shortages (it's Cuba!). If you go with an open mind, you'll have an incredible time.
