"This desert gem offers adventure, relaxation, and some of the most photogenic landscapes in the country."
Sedona, Arizona, is one of the most breathtaking destinations in the American Southwest. With its towering red rock formations, scenic hiking trails, and spiritual vortex sites, this desert gem offers adventure, relaxation, and some of the most photogenic landscapes in the country.
Join me, as we explore the must-see sights of Sedona, including stunning overlooks, hidden trails, and even some epic drone footage of this rugged paradise!
Cathedral Rock – The Iconic Landmark
If there’s one place that defines Sedona, it’s Cathedral Rock. This towering sandstone formation is one of the most photographed spots in Arizona—and for good reason. Whether you hike the steep Cathedral Rock Trail to catch a jaw-dropping sunset or admire it from below along Oak Creek, this landmark is a must-see.
Pro Tip: If you’re up for a challenge, time your hike for sunrise or sunset to experience the rock formations glowing in fiery red hues.
Devil’s Bridge – A Natural Wonder
Looking for that perfect Instagram shot? Devil’s Bridge is one of Sedona’s most famous hikes, leading to a massive natural sandstone arch. The hike is moderate, but the final climb requires a bit of scrambling, so make sure to bring your smart watch with you. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views and the thrill of standing on a narrow rock bridge with sheer drop-offs on both sides.
Hiking Tip: Start early to beat the crowds and consider a high-clearance vehicle if taking the rugged access road to the trailhead.
Bell Rock & Courthouse Butte – Energy & Adventure
Sedona is famous for its beautiful sights, and Bell Rock is one of the most powerful. This short but scenic Bell Rock Climb is worth it for the panoramic views of the surrounding desert.
Nearby, Courthouse Butte Loop Trail offers a less crowded but equally stunning trek around one of Sedona’s massive rock formations.
Drone Tip: While drone flying is restricted in certain areas, there are plenty of nearby open spaces where you can capture incredible aerial footage of these iconic formations.
Oak Creek Canyon – A Scenic Escape
If you’re looking for a break from the desert heat, Oak Creek Canyon is your oasis. This lush canyon is home to cool swimming holes, scenic overlooks, and shaded hiking trails. Some top spots include:
Slide Rock State Park – A natural water slide carved into the sandstone.
West Fork Trail – A gorgeous, easy hike through towering canyon walls and lush forest.
Photography Tip: Visit in the fall when the canyon is filled with golden and red foliage, creating a striking contrast against the red rock cliffs.
Sedona’s Secret Caves & Hidden Trails
Beyond the famous hikes, Sedona has several hidden gems that are worth seeking out:
Birthing Cave – A short but rewarding hike to a cave with a uniquely shaped opening, framing the desert landscape.
Soldier Pass Cave – A moderate hike leading to an epic sandstone cave with natural windows.
Subway Cave – One of Sedona’s most stunning but lesser-known rock formations, perfect for photos.
Adventure Tip: Some of these caves require off-the-beaten-path navigation, so bring a map or GPS to stay on track.
Red Rock Scenic Byway – A Drive to Remember
If you don’t feel like hiking but still want to experience Sedona’s beauty, take a drive along Highway 179, also known as the Red Rock Scenic Byway. This winding road offers unbeatable views of Sedona’s iconic rock formations, with plenty of pull-offs for capturing stunning photos.
Best Stops: Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte.
Essential Sedona Travel Tips
1. Start Early – Sedona’s most popular trails get crowded fast, so hit the trails at sunrise for the best experience.
2. Bring The right clothes– Even in the desert, mornings and evenings can be chilly, if you’re going to be hiking, we recommend bringing some good hiking boots with you. Whether it’s hot or cold, make sure to bring a hat to either block out the sun or to keep you warm, and some sunglasses as well.
3. Hydrate & Protect Yourself – The dry climate and strong sun can be intense, so bring a water bottle and wear sunscreen.
4. Bring a good camera - A good quality camera is a must-bring if you enjoy photography or just to remember your trip. Another good tip is to bring a selfie stick to capture stunning views from a higher angle.
5. Check Drone Regulations– Sedona has strict drone laws, but there are designated areas outside of town where you can capture epic aerial footage.
6. Respect the Land – Many of Sedona’s trails pass through sacred Native American sites, so always follow Leave No Trace principles.
