Calling all animal lovers! If you're ready for the most immersive and unforgettable wildlife experience, you absolutely must visit an elephant sanctuary. This bucket-list adventure will become one of your core memories—trust me!
Our Journey to the Pattaya Elephant Sanctuary
During a recent cruise through Asia, we docked at Laem Chabang Port, the closest port to Bangkok, Thailand (about 2 hours away). Instead of heading to the city, we booked a tour with the Pattaya Elephant Sanctuary in Thailand, located an hour in the opposite direction.
Since we didn’t arrange transportation ahead of time, we hired a private driver right off the cruise ship (highly recommended for groups!). If you're staying in Pattaya, the sanctuary offers hotel pick-up and drop-off, making it super convenient.
Arriving at the Sanctuary
The sanctuary is nestled in a remote, lush location—no public transport here, so a driver is a must. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by our guide, a full-time volunteer. In fact, all caretakers here are volunteers who live on-site, dedicating their lives to protecting and educating visitors about these majestic creatures.
The Sanctuary Experience
- Cost: ~$80 USD per person (cash only, local currency).
- Duration: 3-hour tour + a delicious vegetarian Thai buffet (those egg rolls and noodles—still dreaming about them!).
- Elephants: Five rescued elephants, each with their own dedicated caretaker.
What We Did:
1. Nature Walk: We strolled through a wooded forest with the elephants, petting, hugging, and even getting kisses from them!
2. Bathing Time: We helped bathe them—such a magical experience! They’re gentle giants who love to play. (Yes, I cried looking into their eyes—such a deep connection!)
3. Pool Playtime: The youngest elephant, Frankie, splashed us relentlessly—so adorable!
4. Feeding Session: We learned to make veggie-starch balls, which the elephants devoured happily.
Tips for Your Visit
- Bring a change of clothes & a quick-dry towel (you will get wet!).
- Showers are available to freshen up afterward.
- Protect your phone with a sturdy waterproof case—you’ll want to capture every moment!
Why You Should Go
This sanctuary is ethical, educational, and heartwarming. The elephants are rescued, not exploited, and all proceeds go directly to their care.
