If you just go straight down, it can leave a little bit of a gap there. So all you need to do is just go into the center. You just push your hands together and then it'll create a nice tight seal. All you have to do is just throw it in the dishwasher and it cleans it right up. So if you're looking for a quick and easy way to strain your vegetables, your pasta, rice, whatever it is you need to strain, you're going to love this. But that's just my point of view.
