So in the case of the tray, it actually comes pretty natural. It has not been treated. In my case, I actually wanted the natural color. So I went ahead and just sanded the piece, the wood piece on the top and actually fill in some gaps. But I love that they actually give you the choice that if you want to paint the wood, the wood actually comes untreated.
