You can also set a timer for how long you want it to make ice and you can see how the mechanism works up here. It will slowly create the little ice forms and then scoop them out into the main compartment. It works pretty fast in my opinion. In about three hours you have a basket full of ice that you can use right away or you can store it in your freezer for later.
